We are happy to announce that ausland has received the Applause Award for Best Live Music Venues again this year, and the Applause Award for Inclusion for the first time. And again we want to thank all of you who have made this possible - who have put time and energy and creativity into working together on making ausland more accessible (thank you for your patience!), performing, organizing, bartending, doing sound, light and video, sitting in the entrance booth, cleaning the space and last but not least to the audience who keeps coming and keeps this space alive and kicking!
At the same time, we are concerned and angry about the Berlin budget cuts, about cuts to institutions and programs that work on diversity, inclusion and cultural education - and share the statement of the Berlin Migration Council HERE.
Minute/Year is an automated, process-based, durational work, in which sound is played, recorded, and layered, in a resonant space, for one minute each day. This process has been ongoing, daily, since 2016. For the whole of 2025, the work is installed in ausland.
Each day’s one-minute-long recording is posted online, as audio with an accompanying spectrogram image and video. Through this daily process, the work accumulates an acoustic index of sounds. These fragments and traces of activities, large and small, become material for a layered archive, which develops, re-forms, and mutates over time. Each day’s recording is also printed as a receipt. Anyone who might be present in the space is welcome to take this receipt with them, as an ephemeral token of a recorded moment of time.
Minute/Year began on January 1., 2016. It has run for one minute every day, ever since. It has no set ending date.
