Eiko Tsukamoto

Eiko Tsukamoto (b.1986) is a Japanese composer currently based in Berlin, Germany. Prior to her formal composition studies, she studied philosophy in Tokyo and received private composition lessons from Toshio Hosokawa. After completing her studies in philosophy, she moved to Germany in 2009 and has been living in Berlin since 2014. She studied composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Cologne) with Johannes Schöllhorn and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler (Berlin) with Hanspeter Kyburz. Tsukamoto has received commissions among others from KölnMusik, Tongyeong International Music Festival, WDR Köln, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Fondation Royaumont, Haus für Poesie (Berlin), and Musik der Jahrhunderte Stuttgart. She has worked with orchestras and ensembles including Mahler Chamber Orchestra, SWR Symphonieorchester, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Schlagquartett Köln, Ensemble ascolta, Klangforum Wien, and Arditti Quartet. She was the winner of Takefu Composition Award (2008) and nominated for the 22nd Akutagawa Composition Award (2012). In 2018 she won the main prize at the 7th Christoph Delz Foundation Competition for Composers. She received scholarships from Rohm Music Foundation (2013), Nomura Foundation (2014), Hans und Stefan Bernbeck-Stiftung (2016), a residence scholarship in the Künslerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf (from the Ministry of Science, Research and Cultural Affairs Brandenburg) (2017), and a residence scholarship from the Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (2022).
