ZA!

ZA! is a group from Calonge and Terrassa made up of two people and several instruments. After more than twenty years of performing, concerts on fve continents, impossible collaborations and community works and workshops, ZA! are a benchmark in the European underground scene, both for their creativity and their self-management ethic. Their music combines sabrosura and noise, polyrhythms and polymetrics, hardcore and free jazz, futurism and roots, quantum physics and silly jokes, Dadaism and drones. And a high percentage of the result is completed on stage, every night, in a different way, often collectively.

ZA! have played more than 800 concerts, including tours in the US, UK, Japan, Australia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Portugal, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Slovakia, Poland, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Italy, and Spain. They have performed at international festivals (SXSW, Primavera Sound, Sónar, Eurosonic, Les Trans Musicales, Fusion Fest, Canadian Music Week, Dour, Bushfre, Sydney Festival, etc.) as well as on the self-managed and DIY circuit, a network they are proud to be part of and actively contribute to.

ZA! loves to share with other artists and create new music in real time. They are founders of the improvisation collective El Caballo Ganador and have created and participated in several dance, performance, and physical theater pieces. The duo also teaches guided improvisation workshops for professional musicians, amateurs, children, and lovers of other artistic disciplines. Their workshops, which often end with a collective performance involving the audience, have taken place in different parts of the world: Barcelona, Berlin, Melbourne, Maputo, Tenerife, the Azores, etc. These concerts have brought together up to 40 musicians/dancers/poets composing in real time based on the common language of improvisation.

ZA! likes the spirit of Do It Yourself (Fugazi's, not Ikea's), but they like the spirit of Do It Together even more: they self-publish through their label Gandula, in association with small independent record labels from different parts of the world.
