Ruth Goller is a bassist, singer, composer, environmental activist and an important part of UK's creative music scene, praised for her “thunderous bass-guitar hooks” (The Guardian). She made a name for herself as a sought-after musician with the punk-jazz bands Acoustic Ladyland and Melt Yourself Down. With SKYLLA (named after the three-headed sea monster) she combines an idiosyncratically tuned bass with layers of siren-like vocals and strange sounds. Otherworldly songs from a fever dream emerge right under the audience's eyes and ears, haunting and distant. Ruth Goller has collaborated with a number of well-known artists, including Sons Of Kemet, Marc Ribot, Alabaster DePlume, Paul McCartney and Damon Albarn. In March 2024, Ruth Goller's second album SKYLLUMINA has been released via International Anthem.
It is no exaggeration to call The Magic I.D. a supergroup of the Berlin experimental scene. With their duo The International Nothing, clarinetists Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke had already found a way to merge their instruments into a warm, constantly moving sound. The singer Margareth Kammerer has shaped her own genre with her straight, direct expression and songs of magical simplicity. Christof Kurzmann is a central figure in international electronic and experimental music and free jazz. Together the quartet explores similarities and contrasts between songwriting and abstract music. They released two albums of high praise a longer while ago and kept things quiet lately. This concert at ausland marks The Magic I.D’s first Berlin appearance in five years.
The concert takes place as part of the Month of Contemporary Music Berlin (Monat der zeitgenössischen Musik).
